Pathologist's report on Niisi

The long awaited pathologist's report on our late Niisi arrived yesterday. I spoke with the vet on the phone, and she explained that Niisi had a suppurating lung infection, i.e. an infection that was producing fluid. Apparently these can be quite hard to treat, because the dog may be able to cover its illness relatively long. Typically a viral infection is followed by a bacterial infection, and when the first outward symptoms appear, the infection has already spread too widely. This is possibly what happened with Niisi, or the bacteria may have been resistant to the antibiotic that was first tried. No specific bacteria were identified in Niisi's examination.

The pathologist's concludes: "Obduction findings indicate primarily a bacterial pneumonia, possibly preceded by a viral infection. This has caused sepsis and severely damaged lung tissue."
